MRS. LA FAYE DUREN
LaFaye Carpenter Duren serves as the organist of Second Baptist Church. She received her degree in music from Our Lady of the Lake University, with a concentration in organ and piano. Her advanced studies were completed at Texas Wesleyan University and the University of the Incarnate Word. Each summer she continues the study of the organ and sacred music.
Her repertoire includes arrangements of the African American Spirituals, fanfares and the great hymns of the church.
LaFaye Duren is recognized by Second Baptist Church for her many years of service. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award and Certificate of Church Organist Extraordinaire. She has also been recognized by the Chancel, Contemporaries and Men’s Choirs.
In addition to her duties as organist, she is a teacher at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles where she works with the Language Arts and Music department.
The professional awards she has received are Outstanding Leader in Catholic Education, Phi Delta Kappa Educator’s Hall of Fame, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Sunshine Cottage School for the Deaf Teacher of the Year, Radio Station Magic 105 Teacher of the Month, National Honor Roll, and Teacher’s Who Make A Difference.
She is a member of the American Guild of Organists and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
